NOKIA LUMIA 610 REVIEW:
The 'Lumia' range definitely helped disperse the dark clouds that crowded Nokia's position and most importantly its future in the smartphone market.
While it's profit margins may not have done a complete turnaround, the growing popularity of Windows Phone in India definitely gives hope. Thanks to its successful campaigns ' Smoked by Windows Phone' and 'Money back challenge', the beautifully crafted Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 devices have managed to find its fans.
The latest addition to this line-up is the 'aspirational' Windows Phone for the masses - the Lumia 610.
The device was a head-turner at MWC 2012 which was held way back in February. It managed to capture the attention of its audience owing to its price - the lowest yet for a Windows Phone.
Eventhough the Lumia 610 is touted as the cheapest Windows phone, a helpful serving of signature experiences makes it give some tough competition to its siblings, specially Lumia 710.
Priced at Rs 12,999, the Lumia 610, makes for a affordable option for those looking to taste the fluid and immersive UI that Windows phone delivers. Apart from some sibling rivalry, the device is also gunning for Android lovers who are looking for other viable offerings.
The most unique feature of the Windows phone is its 'fluidity'. The Lumia 610 follows the suit and glides in rather well with the loading time stretching between a second or two, depending on the function it is performing.
This is quite a feat specially when you consider that the device is powered by a 800MHz processor. However on the down-side the low hardware specification like 800MHz processor paired with 256MB of RAM, renders it incapable of running complex and graphic heavy applications. The list is quite exhaustive and includes Angry Birds, Skype, Tango Video Calls, NFS Hot Pursuit among others.The device has a solid built and a comparable grip. While the chrome edges don't yell out 'premium', the device doesn't look one bit cheap or flimsy. We thought the device was quite stylish, in fact far better than some of the Android alternatives staring at you at this price
On the display front, the device sports a 3.7-inch LCD screen. While it may appear a little pale in the 'clarity' department when compared to the Lumia 800, overall it does bring in a very neat and bright display. It does step ahead of its siblings when it comes to attaching multiple images to messages. This is something you can't attempt with a Lumia 800 or Lumia 710 as of now.
Designed to appeal to the new generation of smartphone users, it does not come as a surprise that Nokia has introduced several new and unique features to give Lumia 610 a edge among its rivals. This includes Music with Mix radio, creative studio, Wi-Fi tethering. Flip-to silence, Xbox live and Play To.
Talking a little bit more about the 'signature experiences' consumers will love the Mix Radio - a free mobile music-streaming and offline listening app that provides access to a host of locally relevant as well as new mixes from its collection of more than 40 lakh tracks across various genres.
Next feature that tops our list is the Nokia transport. This app will make sure that you always get home thanks to its voice-guided, turn-by-turn instructions. In addition it also tracks public transportation in more than 430 cities worldwide.
Last but not the least Nokia has something store in for the Paparazzi's as well. Photos and videos can be captured through its impressive 5-megapixel camera. We got some pretty descent test shots and specially loved the 'group-shots' option which comes to your rescue while snapping pictures at birthday parties or office functions. We found the video to be a little grainy, but nevertheless the colors turned out to be good.
Overall we were quite impressed with the budget beast. While it may not gather standing ovations, we think with its immersive and well-rounded experience it actually stands a good chance of becoming Nokia's best selling device. As for the flaws the overall usability definitely makes it easy to overlook some of the weaker spots on the spec sheet.
