A Fingerprint Safe Phone

By Christina Jones

If you have trouble remembering your four digit security pin, then you'll love the newest idea coming out of Apple. Wouldn't it be easier to just use your fingerprint, rather than having another code to remember? It is rumoured that Apple are going to introduce a fingerprint scanner on their next iPhone, allowing you to access it without any hassle.

AuthenTec were a biometric security firm, who were not that well-known outside of technology circles. That is until, Apple brought them for lb235 million last summer. By showing their hand and declaring that they are indeed looking at biometric security features, Apple has revealed that the speculation was based on pure fact.

These same rumour sources have been predicting minimal changes to the appearance of the new iPhone 5S, but will improvements inside. Yet again, a faster processor and a better camera being the main attractions. Some predictions of a cheaper version have surfaced, along with talk of a new iPad model coming out.

To remove the need for a pin code, a fingerprint reader would need to be housed in the screen of the iPhone. Allowing you to scan your finger, rather than remember a random four digit pin. Samsung phones feature their "Face Unlock", which recognises a user's face and unlocks the phone without further need to enter a pin. The feature has been around for over a year now, allowing the firm to iron out the creases and release a new version, which doesn't allow you to use a photo instead of a real person.

The Galaxy S4 and Apple's iPhone, both house good voice recognition programs, which can recognise words but not different voices. This application could be used to provide quick and easy access to a phone, if the programs are developed further to be able to distinguish between different tones and inflections in people's voices. Samsung's eye tracking feature uses Smart Stay to ensure the screen is always lit when a user is looking at it. This has recently been developed further to provide some more useful features.

Samsung's developments have been revealed in their recent trademark applications for the names "Eye Scroll" and "Samsung Eye Scroll". It seems that these new uses of the eye tracking, would allow for the phone to automatically scroll the pages being viewed. Removing the need to manually touch the screen and move the page.

Fingerprint scanners have been available on laptops for a few years now, but it will take the phone market to drive their commercial success. A fingerprint could form your whole security checking process, completely removing the need to remember a series of passwords which change every month.

Google has jumped on the band wagon and began researching into a universal security system that would allow users to log into sites and services, using just their smart phone. Creating an ID ring that you would associate all of your online accounts with, removing the need for a series of passwords or even a solitary one, using your biometrics to log in, providing the highest form of security currently available.
