Law Enforcement Needs Durable Computers

By Allyson Westcot

The Border Patrol in America face danger each day while doing their jobs. They often call on local law enforcement agencies to provide them with help. Law enforcement in Luna County, New Mexico, is close enough that calls come often. It's vital that all the police can be reached swiftly and can communicate with each other to share info. This happens to be true for everyday law enforcement but it becomes far more critical when the Border Patrol contacts them for assistance.

If the requirement was only to send police who might be at work out into the field to help secure the border, communication and mobile computing would not be as important. But police are usually already in the field working to keep the county safe. To minimize paperwork and keep all officials who are out in the field ready to reply at a minute's notice, their police cars have been fitted out with trustworthy Panasonic Toughbook 31 laptops.

Law enforcement has already got a dispatch system, where a dispatch officer contacts each unit to inform them of any situations that need their attention. But it's rather more efficient, and serves many other purposes, for officers to have durable laptops in their automobiles. Not only does that facilitate better communication, but they can work on reports, get instant alerts and do their jobs more efficiently, all without needing to fret about their computers breaking down.

The Luna County laptops were set up with mobile broadband through a cell telephone provider. Wi-Fi isn't far-reaching and reliable enough for mobile law enforcement, so always having an available broadband web connection to get online, send e-mails and communicate is vital. The addition of broadband service turns it from a portable PC to an on-the-go communications hub.

That connection lets law enforcement to get up-to-the-minute reports from the office and from other officers. When they can be connected this easily, it not only lets them do a more satisfactory job of securing the border, but it also helps keep them safer.
