Exactly what does Unlocked signify when purchasing a smartphone?

By Chris Pastor

An unlocked cellular phone can mean one of two things; you can use it with any carrier or that you can install any app on it. With the price of present day smartphones running to a few hundred dollars, the phone makers and the network carriers have to give some attractive options in order to get customers to upgrade their mobile phone. The typical way is to offer the mobile phone completely free or with a huge discount and in return you sign up for a legal contract in which you agree to pay a minimum amount monthly. The sting in the tail is that even though you get the newest phone valued at hundreds of dollars, it is usually locked to the service provider you agreed to the contract with. As a result, if you wish to switch providers or change to a pay as you go plan when the agreement expires you will have a difficult time taking your phone with you.

The quickest approach to finding out if the phone is locked to a network carrier is to put in a sim card from another provider and see if you get a signal and you can make calls. If you cannot then you most probably have a locked smartphone. The 'lock' isn't a physical lock but an application deep within the operating system? This program determines that the network provider is valid and inhibits any effort to hook up to another carrier.

It is possible, however fairly risky, to unlock a device either by entering a series of numbers from the keypad or hooking it up with a laptop or computer which has software to erase or reprogram the core OS. You'll not come across any retailers offering this service but the small, independently owned cell phone shops might offer this service for a fee if you ask them. In spite of this, be aware that when you do attempt to unlock your mobile phone for use on another carrier it likely nulls the warranty. There is always the risk it may erase the device memory permanently and then you will have a mass of plastic and metal about as useful as a brick.

One reason you might want to get the phone unlocked, and one of the driving factors many folk seek to do so is when you're traveling in foreign countries for any amount of time you may want to maintain your device but utilize a local sim card to lower your expenses on phone calls, text messages and data. A locked phone is not going to provide the option to achieve this so the sole option is to get the phone unlocked.

An additional kind of locking is the restrictions established by the producer of the device. The Apple iPhone is notorious for this since Steve Jobs made a decision that he doesn't want individuals fooling with the OS or adding unapproved programs. This has given rise to the term 'jailbreaking' for the iPhone. Numerous customers attempt to break free and unlock their iPhone by means of jailbreaking it. However, doing so voids the warranty and support.

By contrast, Google's Android smartphones are open source and offer the freedom and flexibility to customize everything. Programmers have the freedom to develop and install virtually any app which most argue makes the Android an exceptional operating system because there is no need to unlock it, jailbreak it or circumnavigate limitations that have been applied. Nevertheless, most network service providers will lock the phone to their network and you may want unlocking services from a neighborhood cellular shop.
