Essential Info About The Hard Disk

By Peter Garrilloid

You are the kind of person that dedicates most of your time in front of you PC, being online, more than any device in your home. For someone who dedicates that much time with a specific gadget, basic information about the gadget must be in your knowledge. And what better way to learn about the computer than learning about one of its more important parts - the hard disk drive.

The hard disk drive is known as a storage device. It is designed so that a person can get and store digital information through the use of rotating discs that ha magnetic coating. They are called such because of the hard platter present in the device. It came about in the year 1950 through the brilliant creation of IBM as a backup storage device for personal computers. The hard disks at this time are very big, with a diameter of about twenty inches and storage capability of only a few megabytes. Since then, the hard disk has undergone numerous transformations. But even with all the changes, there are a few things about the hard disk that haven't changed.

An example of the unchanged aspect is the huge capacity of the hard disk that's always greater than that of the floppy disk. Other than the capacity of the hard disk, it's performance that's scored based on the amount of time needed to move the heads to a file, the time needed to move the file under its head and the time it takes for the file to be transferred is very exceptional. Also another quality of the hard disk is that it can still function even when its power is off. Also another amazing feature of the hard disk drive is that it can allow you to check out the stored information and files in a non-sequential manner. Hard disk can also help back-up important information that you have in your computer or laptop.

Presently though, the hard disk dominance in the computer world has been threatened due to the creation of the flash memory or solid-state drives. Nonetheless, there's no need for the hard disk to be worried because many companies promise to use the device not only today but in the many years to come.

Now that's about all the basic things you can learn about the hard disk and you can already somehow call yourself familiar with the components of the computer you use every single day.
